It’s completely normal to feel a little anxious heading into your first CrossFit class.
Even those who know little about the hugely successful fitness movement will likely be aware that it has a reputation as an intense and demanding workout, so it’s entirely understandable for a novice CrossFit athlete to experience a few butterflies before stepping into the unknown.
However, with CrossFit suitable for participants at all levels of fitness (not to mention the many other benefits that make it such a popular model) it’s time to banish the nerves and start getting excited about your first class!
Here’s what to expect – and what to look forward to – as you begin your CrossFit journey.
If you’re new to CrossFit, chances are you will likely sweat as you’ve never sweat before! Make sure you stay well hydrated in advance of and during the class and don’t forget a towel and change of top to help you feel fresher after your first CrossFit workout.
Avoid wearing clothes that are too baggy so the coaches can observe your movements, and wear shoes suitable for high-intensity training.
Each CrossFit class will be around one hour long and will incorporate several key elements. Expect your first CrossFit class to include:
The CrossFit method is based on high-intensity functional movements and is broken up into three different elements: gymnastics, weightlifting and monostructural metabolic conditioning, also known as cardio.
Each workout will involve a different variety of movements under these three categories, ensuring your body is continuously challenged.
Yes, a coach will be present throughout the class to motivate participants and monitor performance.
While they will keep a watchful eye on everyone in the class, the majority of their attention will likely be given to new members. This is because first-timers will need weights and workout movements adjusted based on their fitness and skill levels.
On the contrary, a CrossFit class is known for being one of the most welcoming gym environments out there.
The overall aim is for everyone to finish together and as a team, regardless of each individual’s fitness level, so participants are highly encouraged to build each other up and spur each other on.
From the kick-off of the WOD, which starts with a motivational “Three, two, one – GO!” to the final seconds of the class, CrossFit nurtures the concept of community and coming together through exercise.
Stepping into the unknown and putting yourself out there as you try something new is tough, which is why choosing the right CrossFit gym can be a game-changer.
